Carelon Behavioral Health Credentialing for Mental Health Providers

Carelon Behavioral Health manages mental health and substance use benefits for a wide range of health plans and employers, including a large share of Anthem members. For many therapists, psychologists, and PMHNPs, joining the Carelon network opens access to clients who would otherwise struggle to find an in network provider.

Carelon was formerly known as Beacon Health Options. If you were credentialed with Beacon in the past, your participation may not reflect your current practice, location, or tax information, so it is worth confirming your status before assuming you are still in network.

Who Should Consider Carelon

•      Providers in private practice who see clients with Anthem or other plans that use Carelon for behavioral health

•      Group practices adding new clinicians to an existing Carelon agreement

•      Providers previously credentialed with Beacon who have moved, changed tax IDs, or joined a new practice

•      PMHNPs and other prescribers looking to expand their payer mix

Common Challenges With Carelon Credentialing

Carelon's enrollment process has changed in recent years, and older Beacon records do not always match a provider's current details. Applications can stall when profiles fall out of date or when notices reach the wrong person, and many providers do not learn about a problem until weeks have passed. Group and individual participation also work differently, which can cause confusion about who is actually in network.

Frequently Asked Questions

I was credentialed with Beacon Health Options. Am I still in network?

Possibly, but not always. Participation often depends on whether your practice details are current. We verify your status before recommending next steps.

Is Carelon the same as Anthem?

No. Carelon and Anthem share a parent company, and Carelon manages behavioral health benefits for many Anthem plans, but it has its own network and credentialing process.
